Addiction issues can complicate a divorce

Ending a marriage can be a difficult decision for any person. There are many considerations that need to be made when a person in Arkansas decides to divorce. A divorce can be an emotionally draining, financially difficult and overall stressful time for children and parents alike.

The concerns that come along with divorce can be exacerbated in certain situations. For example, domestic violence can make many of divorce legal issues more complicated. Additionally, addiction issues can also complicate a person’s divorce.

Data shows that many Americans are dealing with addiction of some kind. In fact, estimates have claims that between 12 and 13 million people in the United States suffer from alcoholism. More surprising, between one and two million people are cocaine addicts. Others deal with addictions to other narcotics, prescription drugs and marijuana. When dealing with a spouse who has an addiction problem, a divorce can be more complicated.

People who are trying to divorce with a spouse with an addiction issue need to document their spouse’s issues. In particular, if the couple has children, it is important to have a written record of a spouse’s addiction problems. With this record, people can be sure that their children are not left in the care of the other spouse.

It is also important for spouses to address the addiction issues when dealing with child custody. Part of the divorce settlement, for example, can include treatment options that the addicted spouse must meet before a child can be left with that person.

Addiction can negatively impact family’s life in a number of serious ways. It is important for people to understand how addiction affects their divorce and their divorce settlement. With the right help, families in Arkansas can overcome these issues to move on to a better life.
